Summary/objective

The Division of Academic Affairs at Southern University at New Orleans, a public, historically black university, is committed to empowering and promoting the upward mobility of diverse populations of traditional and nontraditional students through quality academic programs, teaching, research, and service to achieve excellence in higher education using various teaching and learning modalities. As such, faculty of the program are expected to be committed to the standards of teaching excellence. This requirement will include the ability teach undergraduate courses which may include evening, weekend and/or hybrid courses; advise students; engage in teaching practices with an acute focus on documenting student learning; serve on faculty committees; attend departmental, faculty and other meetings, attend College convocations. The ideal candidate will be able to teach a wide range of undergraduate courses in cybersecurity and core computing courses. Preference will be given to candidates with backgrounds and teaching experience in cybersecurity fundamentals, network security, programming, Linux, penetration testing, cloud security, cyber analytics, cyber risk management, cyber operations, contingency planning, and security architecture.

In addition to teaching excellence, faculty are required to engage in scholarly activity and participate in service to the community and institution.

  1. Full-time teaching (15 semester credits) of undergraduate courses which may include evening, weekend and/or on-line courses. The candidate should have teaching experience at the college level.
  2. Teaches assigned Cybersecurity courses and associated labs; informs students in writing of instructional standards; posts and maintains office hours; participates in the assessment of student learning outcomes.
  3. Develops new courses, curriculum, instructional materials, and evaluation tools; assists with the preparation of course proposals, curriculum updates and the construction of degree/certificate programs.
  4. Applies and maintains standards of quality operating methods, processes, systems, and procedures; implements changes as necessary to maintain a successful cybersecurity program; integrates knowledge of industry trends and professional training to continuously improve program and course quality.
  5. Contributes to the maintenance, troubleshooting, and building of hardware and software necessary for the successful deployment of all Cybersecurity courses.
  6. Participates in the recruitment of prospective cybersecurity students. This includes, but is not limited to, working with partner institutions in the development and maintenance of a sustainable recruiting model.
  7. Other responsibilities include serving on college committees, advising students, supervising undergraduate student research projects, and performing other duties as assigned.
  8. It is expected that in addition to the teaching load, faculty maintain 10 hours for office work and 15 hours of service to the University.
  9. Other duties as assigned.

Required education and experience

  • Advanced degree in Cybersecurity, Computer Science or Engineering, Computer Information Systems, or a closely related discipline from an accredited institution by the start date of the appointment.
  • ABD candidates are eligible.
  • Candidates with significant industry experience, professional certifications, and an M.S. in Cybersecurity, or related disciplines are eligible.

Preferred education and experience

  • Doctorate preferred.
  • Industry experience in the candidate's field of expertise is preferred.
  • Professional certifications (e.g. CISSP, CEH, CISM) are a plus.
  • Published works are desired.
