As time allows, these positions also will assist with lichen collection and/or other plant sampling fieldwork.

Our organization, mission, and culture:

The mission of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is to protect, maintain, and improve the fish, game, and aquatic plant resources of the state, and manage their use and development in the best interest of the economy and the well-being of the people of the state, consistent with the sustained yield principle. Work performed in these positions contributes directly to the mission of the Alaska Department of Fish and Game by maintaining habitat assessment tools (i.e., research animals) for use in nutrition studies that inform habitat management and conservation. Additionally, work performed in this position helps in evaluating nutritional carrying capacity of landscapes, consistent with meeting goals of the sustained yield principle.

Benefits of joining our team:

Incumbents in these positions will have unique opportunities to gain hands on experience working with captive wildlife and learning about wildlife nutrition and foraging ecology. Incumbents will have opportunities to increase technicial skills and safe use of chainsaws.

The working conditions you can expect:

The positions are based in Palmer, AK. The incumbents will provide daily care to captive animals and will work on facility improvements and maintenance. Incumbents will have occasional opportunities for fieldwork to collect lichens for caribou. Most work will occur outdoors and as the season progresses, snow, wind, and cold temperatures are typical. Hours will be irregular and include weekends, evenings, and holidays for the duration of the position. Incumbents are expected to be willing to work long hours as needed to meet animal care needs. Incumbents will be limited to one week of unpaid leave during the project, pending supervisor approval.

These positions require incumbents to be available to work irregular hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays. Occasional overnight work may be required. The incumbents should be willing to accept work schedules that can change on short notice to accommodate animal husbandry needs and must be flexible in terms of scheduling.
