NATURE OF WORK
The Town of Windsor Museums' mission is to build community through creativity and discovery. As part of the Culture Division of the Town of Windsor Parks, Recreation, and Culture Department, the Museums consist of the Art & Heritage Center, an exhibit and program space; and the Windsor History Museum, a collection of historical buildings including the town's 1882 Train Depot, which houses historical exhibits. The History Museum also features two education gardens including a vegetable plot and a pollinator patch. The Museums seek to provide exceptional educational and interpretive experiences focusing on local history, nature education, and art.
The Recreation Specialist - Museum Education will collaborate with Culture Division staff on the development and facilitation of public programming and informal education projects. Additionally, the Recreation Specialist - Museum Education may be asked to complete other duties to support the Culture Division and the Town of Windsor Museums including, but not limited to, creating marketing and social media content, performing research, staffing the facilities during open hours, assisting during community events, and participating in larger Parks, Recreation & Culture initiatives. The Recreation Specialist - Museum Education provides excellent and friendly customer service to every person who visits the Museums and is passionate about education and discovery.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Individuals work under the direct supervision of the Museum Education Coordinator to carry out assigned duties, functions, roles and projects in both routine and complex circumstances.

Essential Job Functions


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The individual in the Recreation Specialist - Museum Education role is assigned specific assignments, job duties, scope, authority, responsibility, roles, and requirements as determined by the town, department, division, and pursuant to laws, regulations, and practices. Individuals in this position must be able to successfully perform, be responsible for, and/or assist in the fulfillment of many job functions and duties with or without reasonable accommodations.
The following duties and responsibilities are illustrative of the primary functions of this position and are not intended to be all-inclusive:
  • Provide direct instruction and supervision of museum programs including early childhood, family, and adult programs, camps, tours, and field trips.
  • Conduct outreach to local and regional organizations including schools, non-profits, and other groups.
  • Facilitate and assist volunteers and interns while they are working in the Museum facilities, including the Museum Education Gardens (MEG) volunteers.
  • Manage Museum Education Collection following current best practices to ensure the safety of objects.
  • Maintain Museum supplies for education use including ordering new supplies when necessary.
  • Assist with Museum open hours and general museum operations such as visitor tracking.
  • Assist in planning and execution of Museum special events.
  • Assist with other museum projects including tour development, exhibit development and installation, planning efforts, and research requests as needed.
  • Assist with marketing content, including monthly newsletter and social media.
OTHER DUTIES:
Depending on organizational need, additional duties may include the following:
  • Perform research as directed, such as discovering new technology or tools, market research, etc.
  • May be involved in special projects that are directly or indirectly related to essential job functions.
  • Completes educational and certification opportunities in order to remain abreast of current methods and procedures in museum education and interpretation.

Education, Knowledge, Skills, Abilities


EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND FORMAL TRAINING
  • Minimum of one (1) year of previous teaching experience in a formal or informal environment
  • Minimum high school diploma or GED
  • Associate degree or two years of college courses in a related field preferred
  • Equivalent combination of training and experience that provides evidence that the applicant possesses the required knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
LICENSES OR CERTIFICATES
  • Must have a valid Colorado Driver's License, or the ability to obtain one upon hire, that meets the Town of Windsor's standards
  • CPR/First Aid/AED certification or ability to obtain within three (3) months of employment
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to communicate in a professional, courteous, and timely manner both verbally and written when dealing with town employees, citizens, customers, and vendors.
  • Ability to interact with all age groups. This may include instruction, communication of rules and regulations, and enforcing policies.
  • Manage time efficiently in order to organize and prioritize multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Ability to handle difficult situations involving facility guests with patience, good judgment, and with diplomacy.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook, etc.).
EQUIPMENT and MATERIALS USED
Materials and equipment used include, but may not be limited to the following:
  1. Equipment : Position requires use of various equipment including, computers/tablets/other digital equipment, calculators, copiers, printers, fax machines, multi-line telephone systems.

The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; extensive reading; visual inspection involving small defects, small parts, and/or operation of machines (including inspection); using measurement devices; and/or assembly or fabrication of parts at distances close to the eyes.

The employee may be subject to the following environmental conditions: inside, such as an office setting; outside, with little to no effective protection from weather; subject to noise.
