As the Radiation Safety Officer/Assistant Director for Research Laboratory Safety, you will:

  • Serve as the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Radiation Safety Officer, and direct UNL's laser safety and general laboratory safety programs.
  • Prepare, submit, maintain, and implement UNL's Broadscope Radioactive Materials License and other licenses and safety programs for high-hazard devices (e.g., neutron generators, pulsed lasers, x-ray devices) in compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Develop, review, and maintain safety policies, protocols, and procedures across campus operations, ensuring they meet regulatory standards.
  • Design and implement compliance plans, conduct shielding design reviews, perform radiation dose evaluations, and oversee audits to identify compliance issues and corrective actions.
  • Direct a comprehensive training program for employees and students working with radioactive materials, ensuring up-to-date compliance with regulatory training requirements, and oversee accurate maintenance of training records.
  • Oversee calibration, repair, and quality control programs for radiation detection instruments, ensuring accurate functionality.
  • Manage exposure tracking and health monitoring programs for radiation workers to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Plan, develop, and direct all aspects of the Research/Laboratory Safety Program, working closely with technicians and waste management teams to fully implement safety protocols.
  • Collaborate with waste management and DOT personnel to ensure proper handling, storage, and disposal of radioactive waste.
  • Serve as the voting RSO on the Campus Radiation Safety Committee, providing expertise and guiding campus safety decisions. Prepare RSC meeting materials and documentation to support committee functions.

Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in health physics, physics, chemistry, biochemistry, biology, toxicology, industrial hygiene or similar science.
  • 3+ years in applied health physics.
  • Knowledge of principles, practices, and regulations for ionizing radiation, broadscope licensing requirements, and lasers.
  • Expertise in planning, designing, and implementing radiation protection and safety compliance programs.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication (oral and written) skills.
  • Proven ability to effectively manage multiple priorities.
  • Skilled in formulating and documenting complex reports for unique operations.
  • Experience in supervising and managing staff effectively.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and meet University driver eligibility requirements.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in health physics preferred.
  • 1 year of professional experience in other EHS disciplines.
  • Supervision experience.
  • Working knowledge of ancillary regulations affecting radiation protection and lab safety (e.g., general lab safety, transport, waste management).
  • General understanding of mechanical systems and construction design for complex research facilities.
  • Certified Health Physicist (CHP), Laser Safety Officer (LSO), or other relevant professional certification.
