Job Description

Job Description Norfolk Southern (NS) conductors are responsible for the safe and efficient movement of freight trains. A conductor's duties include coupling railcars to build trains, delivering railcars to local customers, and transporting trains hundreds of miles. Responsibilities also include handling and interpreting electronic paperwork/track inventory, troubleshooting train issues, incident reporting, and inspection procedures. The conductor position may require a significant lifestyle change due to a 24/7/365 schedule and a need to be available on short notice (up to 90 minutes). Please refer to the links below to learn about the conductor role prior to submitting your application. During training, a Conductor Trainee (CT) earns $25 per hour, with a minimum of $200 in earnings per shift excluding weekends. After training, conductors earn an average of $70,000 annually in their first year. Conductors can earn more with union seniority. Experienced conductors earn an average of $84,000 per year. Depending on location and seniority, a conductor may be promoted to a locomotive engineer position, which has a guaranteed minimum earnings of approximately $94,000; many engineers earn $100,000+ with available opportunities. Training and Schedule Training Norfolk Southern provides a comprehensive training program for both conductor and locomotive engineer roles, including classroom and field training. CTs should expect roughly 14–16 weeks of training before promotion to conductor. The first 5 weeks are at the NS Training Center in McDonough, GA. Trainees are responsible for transportation to the area; NS provides hotel accommodation, mileage reimbursement, and a meal stipend during this 5-week period. The remaining 11–13 weeks occur at or near the hire location for on-the-job training. Successful completion of the training program results in FRA Certification as a Qualified Conductor serving in freight train service. Certification requires passing written tests on safety, hazmat, signals, and field evaluations. Work Schedule A CT is expected to work a schedule similar to a regular conductor. Conductors may be on a conductors’ extra board with a minimum of two rest days for every six consecutive working days. When not on rest days, you may be called to work on a 24-hour basis as needed. Extra board work schedules are irregular and determined by business needs. Conductors and CTs may be required to work up to 12 hours daily and should be prepared for full-day commitments. You will be required to report to your work location within a 90-minute to 2-hour notice, and reliable transportation is necessary. Expect to spend time away from home, typically 1–2 days at a time. Additional Information Medical insurance for you, your spouse, and eligible dependents begins on the first day of the second calendar month of employment. After one year, you are eligible for dental insurance for you and eligible dependents, a $20,000 life insurance plan, and participation in the Norfolk Southern 401(k) plan. You are subject to Railroad Retirement taxes and benefits. Conductors can qualify for up to 5 weeks of paid time off based on work record and seniority. Additional information on benefits is available at YourTrackToHealth.com . Union Membership You will be required to join a union within 60 days of becoming a conductor and establishing a seniority date. Average union dues are $110 per month. Alcohol and Drug Policy A pre-employment drug and alcohol screening is required. Throughout your career, conductors are subject to random testing per Federal Railroad Administration Guidelines. Norfolk Southern maintains a ZERO TOLERANCE policy for substance abuse. Company Overview Norfolk Southern Corporation (NYSE: NSC) is a Fortune 300 transportation company. Its subsidiary operates approximately 19,500 route miles in 22 states and the District of Columbia, serving major container ports in the eastern United States and providing connections to other rail carriers.
